Excursions
Mount Etna from Taormina
Europe’s highest active volcano dominates the view from Taormina. In one day you can head up towards the craters, walk across lava flows and taste the wines grown on its slopes.
Two sides, two experiences
Etna North – Piano Provenzana
The side closest to Taormina, about an hour’s drive via Linguaglossa: pine forests, recent lava flows and, with a guide and 4×4, the climb towards the summit craters.
Etna South – Rifugio Sapienza
At about 1,900 metres above Nicolosi, an hour and a half’s drive away: starting point for the Etna cable car, the 4×4 vehicles to higher altitudes and the Silvestri Craters trail.
How high can you go
From Rifugio Sapienza the cable car climbs to about 2,500 metres; from there 4×4 vehicles and guided excursions continue towards 2,800–3,000 metres.
The summit craters can only be visited with authorised alpine or volcanological guides and the right equipment. Access at altitude may change or close depending on volcanic activity: the agencies we work with check conditions every day.
What to bring
- Closed hiking shoes

- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Water and a snack
- ID document
Wine, Alcantara and villages
The northern slopes of Etna are one of Italy’s most exciting wine regions: many wineries around Linguaglossa, Castiglione di Sicilia and Randazzo offer tours and tastings.
In one day you can combine Etna, a winery and the Alcantara Gorges, the basalt canyon about half an hour from Taormina.
